“Floating” is a series of paintings made in collaboration with one of the four elements of nature, water. The ebru technique allows for the color to float on the surface of the water instead of dissolving in it. This way of painting emerged in Central Asia in the 15th century and spread to Anatolia during the Ottoman Empire. It was a spiritual practice of Sufism, because it was believed that GOD was participating into the making of the painting through the unpredictable movements of the water. My intention was to create paintings of female forms and figures but the fluidity of the water resulted into shapes that also resemble clouds or waves. After the colors are sprinkled onto the surface of the bath of water and shaped with the use of a series of tools and needles, I lay the paper on the surface in order to transfer the image. Each ebru is a unique imprint of the face of water.
